Dance Genres:

Ballet

Ballet is the most classical form of dance and the foundation of dance and training at HDA. Ballet helps dancers build strong technique which transfers to their dancing in all dance genres. Ballet is a structured class which focuses on body placement, proper use of turn-out, coordination of the upper and lower body, footwork, strength, control, flexibility, ballet vocabulary, and more. Classes consist of barre exercises, followed by center exercises, onward to traveling across the floor, and finally to a grande allegro and/or reverence (curtsy/bow). Students 12 and older may work towards going en pointe with permission of the Director after showing strong ballet technique, ankle strength, and dedication.

Jazz

Jazz is one of the most popular forms of dance! It is an energetic and dynamic style of dance often seen performed by dancers, dance teams of all ages, collegiate, and professional, such as the NBA. Jazz dance explores parallel movement, as opposed to ballet, while incorporating jazz elements inspired by music. Historically dancers created different styles to ragtime, swing, jazz blues, soul, and funk music influenced by African American and Caribbean roots. With it's rise to popularity jazz dance started being shown in TV and Movies and eventually was danced to popular music as well. Jazz dance has also evolved into the popular form of contemporary dance; which blends jazz, ballet, modern styles. Jazz is a fun class that focuses on isolations, coordination, strength, power, flexibility, spotting, turning, kicking, leaping, and more. Classes consist of a warm-up, conditioning exercises, followed by progressions across the floor, and finally dance combinations/ learning choreography.

Tap

Tap dancing is like making music with your feet! Tap dance is a percussive style of dance using metal taps on the bottom of shoes to create different patterns, steps, rhythms, and sounds. Emerging from the Vaudville era, tap dance gained momentum and popularity in the 1930s with Jazz music. Tappers collaborated with musicians and experimented with syncopation. Tap was featured on TV, in movies, and on Broadway. Styles of tap dance include soft shoe, buck and wing, classical tap, jazz tap, rhythm tap, and Broadway tap. Tap is a fun class that focuses on rhythm, timing, musicality, coordination, ankle strength, music theory, and more. Classes consist of a warm-up, followed by center exercises, onward to traveling across the floor, and lastly combinations/ learning choreography.

Hip-hop

Hip-hop is a funky, high- energy, and extremely fun dance class! Hip-hop is a style of street dance that emerged from Hip-hop music and culture. Hip-hop class focuses on different styles such as popping, locking, breaking, and freestyle. Classes consist of a warm-up, isolations, progression to larger movements, combinations/ learning choreography, and improvisation. In hip-hop class, dancers are encouraged to find their own unique style and individuality.
